By the late 1960s, the Southern Californian surfer scene was growing and there were many skateboarders. Frank Nasworthy (1948-2011) was a young surfer who became a roller skate repairman at the age of fifteen and he owned several shoe stores in southern California. One of his stores, in Torrance, California, stocked Puma sneakers which were very popular at the time and Nasworthy began selling them to local skateboarders who wore them for protection when they banged up against curbs when skating. Nasworthy decided he could produce a better sneaker than Puma if he used his own design ideas but worked with a domestic manufacturer instead of an overseas partner.
After deciding to start his own company in 1969, he got the name Vans from a nickname that a friend of his had given him since he used to wear red and yellow striped canvas shoes while surfing. Nasworthy thought it was an appropriate name for a brand that would produce the kind of shoes he wanted to sell. He set about convincing shoe companies such as Puma and Converse to manufacture his designs by offering them 40% royalties on the sales but they all declined.
He found a manufacturer in Anaheim, California, who was willing to assume all production risk and provide quality control but they required that Nasworthy buy at least 20% of their shares at $50,000 each.
